Recycling

One of the most outstanding features of PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) is its exceptional recyclability.

PET can be recovered and recycled again and again by washing and remelting for use in new PET products or by emically breaking down the PET into its constituent raw materials, which are then purified and converted into new PET.

Almost every municipal recycling system in Europe accepts PET containers. The PET recycling rate across the European Union is around 46 per cent. The development of modern plants that can recycle used PET bottles and jars into new food-grade PET containers (closed-loop recycling) is expanding the resource efficiency of PET even further.

Petainer was among the first companies to use recycled PET for making new containers and now we are considered to be one of the leaders in this field. We are routinely roducing bottles with 50 per cent recycled PET content and can produce bottles with even higher recycled PET content if required.

We are playing a leading role in encouraging and supporting efforts to increase the percentage of PET that is recycled.

Other outlets
Although we would always support and advocate the use of recycled PET into new containers, the material can be reclaimed for a variety of other uses, including:
  • Fibres – around 45 per cent of all recovered European PET is used to produce
    polyester fibres.
  • Other packaging – egg containers and other preformed plastic boxes (such as fruit boxes) account for about 22 per cent of total recycled PET usage.
  • Engineered resins made from recovered PET can be injection moulded to manufacture computer and automotive parts.
